Memorial requesting presidential investigation to receive hearing

OLYMPIA – This week, the Senate Government Operations & Elections Committee will hold a public hearing on Senate Joint Memorial 8016.

The memorial – which has received national attention, including from such outlets as Daily Kos and the Huffington Post – would petition Congress to begin an investigation into the activities of the president and vice president regarding their justification for initiating the invasion of Iraq.

Sen. Eric Oemig, D-Kirkland, is the prime sponsor of the resolution and will testify in support of it. Also testifying in support will be:

  • Salt Lake City Mayor Ross “Rocky” Anderson, a prominent war critic famous for organizing a massive demonstration against President Bush’s 2005 speech before the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Salt Lake City; and
  • Col. Mary Ann Wright, U.S. Army, retired, a former high-ranking State Department official who resigned her post on the eve of the invasion of Iraq as a form of public protest.

The hearing will be held in Senate Hearing 2 of the John A. Cherberg Building on Thursday, March 1 at 3:30 p.m, and will be broadcast on TVW (satellite coordinates below).
