Legislation gives renters and landlords
legal guidance
OLYMPIA — Knowing what to do when a tenant fails
to pay rent can be a real dilemma for the property owner.
This is because understanding the complex process and their
legal rights under the Landlord-Tenant Laws, can be
confusing for both the owner and the renter.
Senate Bill 6060, sponsored by Sen. Adam Kline,
D-Seattle, creates a special process for landlords and
tenants to follow when rent allegedly has not been paid.
This bill was unanimously passed by the Senate Monday.
This legislation clarifies the process and terms of
serving an eviction notice to a tenant for nonpayment of
rent. SB 6060 creates a clear, efficient, and fair process
for both tenants and landlords in the determination of
unlawful detainer actions.
“This bill will greatly facilitate communication between
landlords and tenants,” said Kline. “It is substantially
better than current law.”
SB 6060 passed the Senate on a 48 to 0 vote and now moves
to the House for consideration.
