Hobbs joins military vets, national security experts in nation’s capital to promote clean energy 9/10/2009

Sen. Steve Hobbs, a strong proponent of renewable energy, is in Washington, D.C., for a conference on renewable energy and how it relates to national security.

The conference is hosted by Operation Free, a coalition of veterans and national security organizations concerned about our reliance on fossil fuels and major national security problems caused by climate change.

Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, toured the 3 Phase Energy Systems plant in Auburn recently to learn about the company's new innovations that could create green jobs for Washingtonians and improve the environment.

According to the company, 3 Phase manufactures and markets innovative solutions that capture potential energy from overlooked, undiscovered, underutilized or wasteful processes in businesses and factories today. The company is currently working on a system that will allow businesses to regenerate energy efficiently.

Hobbs: Balancing dual roles 6/17/2009

I took part in my first interim Select Committee Pension Policy meeting yesterday. This may not seem like the most thrilling legislative activity, but it is of vital concern to those enrolled in state pension funds. The committee is comprised of fellow legislators, experts in the pension field and State Actuary Matt Smith. Smith's testimony raised the importance of making full payments to the pension fund. By short changing the current payments, we risk harming future budgets. Our goal is actually to filter bills that relate to pension policy. Our goal as a committee is to ensure that the state is on top of the payment schedule with regard to the pension funds, and we are attempting to set aside as much money as possible (and avoid just meeting the minimum amount), as this will only help us in the long term.

Hobbs: Keeping the legislative wheels turning 6/15/2009

I went to the aerospace roundtable (not to be confused with the first meeting of the Aerospace Taskforce on June 24) this morning. The group is chaired by the Gov's special envoy Bill McSherry. We met today at Edmonds Community College. The main focus was on increasing aerospace training programs, but we also talked about bridging the gap between Boeing and organized labor. I called on both sides to work together to find some middle ground during the upcoming legislative session.

Hobbs named “Business Champion” for third straight year 6/3/2009

Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, has been presented with a 2009 Business Champion Award for his sponsorship and support of legislation to improve the business climate in Washington and Snohomish County.

Hobbs received the award at the Joint Snohomish County Chambers of Commerce Legislative Recognition Breakfast held at the Everett Golf & Country Club.

Bill to free schools from costly education mandates gets green light 5/19/2009

A bill to give districts more time to educate students rather than meeting unnecessary and costly state requirements has been signed into law.

The bill was sponsored by Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, a member of the Senate Early Learning & K-12 Committee.

Hobbs statement on governor’s decision to veto public arts amendment 5/15/2009

Statement by Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, on the decision by Gov. Chris Gregoire decision to veto the public arts amendment in the 2009-2011 capital budget. The amendment would have required the Washington State Arts Commission to restrict the purchase of public art to artists living in our state.

Hobbs tapped to help preserve Washington’s aerospace industry 5/14/2009

Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, has been selected to serve on the Washington Council on Aerospace.

The Council, which was formally introduced today by the governor, will look for ways to keep Washington competitive in the Aerospace industry by removing obstacles that are hurting the sector.
