Keiser bill to save jobs, businesses in Green River Valley clears Senate 2/9/2010
The Senate voted today to help businesses obtain hard-to-find supplemental flood insurance and prevent job losses.
Sens. Karen Keiser, Tracey Eide and Claudia Kauffman are calling the passage of SB 6240 a victory for businesses and workers in the Green River Valley who have been experiencing anxiety and uncertainty because of the potential for flooding and the lack of surplus flood coverage.

WA Senate approves ban on BPA in baby bottles 1/29/2010
The state Senate has passed a bill to ban the use of the chemical BPA in plastic bottles intended for children.
Under Senate Bill 6248, sponsored by Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Kent, baby bottles and sippy cups made with BPA (bisphenol A) may not be distributed, sold or manufactured for children under three years old in Washington.

Keiser, state leaders to Congress: Don’t give up on federal health reform 1/25/2010
Sen. Karen Keiser, along with the governor, insurance commissioner and heads of state agencies are calling on members of Congress to reach an agreement on a health reform bill as soon as possible. A lot is riding on what federal lawmakers do or fail to do. Earlier this month, state House and Senate leaders, Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler and the governor sent a letter to Congress asking that five key provisions be added to the federal reform bill to preserve the Basic Health Program (BHP) and General Assistance-Unemployable medical services. Among other things, the state wants an option for states to expand Medicaid programs to childless adults beginning in April. That would allow the state to meet requirements of a federal Medicaid waiver and help continue BHP and GA-U.

As we finish the second week of our short session, we are taking steps to find places where we can be more efficient in government and also make some necessary cuts before we begin to look at what may be some targeted revenue changes. It's the beginning of a difficult process. For this week, I want to focus on the budget and what is happening.

Sen. Keiser is set to receive the Washington State Nurses Association's (WSNA) 2009 WSNA Legislator of the Year Award.
Sen. Keiser will receive the award at the Annual Nurse Legislative Day on February 8 in Olympia. Keiser is being recognized for her support of quality patient care and WSNA's legislative priorities.
